            All of these studies have shown how emoticons are complex and hard to define. There are perhaps as many definitions of emoticons as there are kinds of emotions. 

Several reserachers have ponted out how emoticons have been seen as passive states that occur only inside one's mind, focusing only on a cognitive view of emotions ( Aragão, 2011, Benesch, 2012; Pavlenko, 2013, So, 2005, Song, 2016).

P. 508- As such, emotions are processes and not really states. These emotional processes (20, 2005) are related to our interactions with the world and to how we respond to them in diffent times and contexts.
